If you’re not coughing in October you’re in a greatly envied minority. Herbal cough syrups and teas our grandmothers used to make were a must have in any medieval household. 

All of these ingredients were believed to be great for persistant cough: burnet saxifrage, cherry, chives, coltsfoot, coriander, cress, elecampane, hazelnut, horseradish, hyssop, iris, juniper, marshmallow (the plant, not the candy), mint, poppy, rosemary, saffron, thyme. (Yes, it’s alphabetical)

Mix any of those with honey, and you’ll be good to go. They are both effective, tasty and fun to make.

  1. Echinacea root, licorice root, honey, fresh ginger, optional brandy
  2. Cayenne, ginger powder, honey, and apple cider vinegar
  3. Marshmallow infusion

Note: be sure to check which of these are for dry and which for productive cough
